Ethnic Land conflicts:A constant Struggle In Kenya

Dr James Mwita

In Kenya, the occurrence of ethnic land conflict seems to be frequent. As such, the Church in general and in particular the MCK has divine role to cognize and makes use of her call to the mission of reconciliation in fostering unity among the people in the current society. However, one wonders if the Methodist church in Kenya has played any role in mitigating ethnic land conflict among the Ameru people of Kenya. This study, investigate the causes of ethnic land conflict in Meru County, Kenya, the role played by MCK and if the church has any known strategy in place to deal with ethnically land-related conflict. Third, to assess the role of indigenous institution Njuri Ncheke of Meru and Methods used to resolve the land conflict. The study was funneled by two theoretical perspectives, ethnic conflict theory and reconciliation theory of Atonement. The study was guided by research question, what causes ethnic land conflict and what should be the role of the church in mitigating ethnic land conflict among the Ameru people of Meru County, Kenya? The other sub-research questions are; what are the perception and causes of ethnic land conflicts among the Ameru people? Does the Methodist Church have any strategy for resolving ethnic land conflict? What has been the role of indigenous institutions the Njuri Ncheke of Meru in dealing with land disputes? The study established that the causes of ethnic land conflict are political influence, disputed on land boundaries / historical land grievances, land titling, and adjudication. The study’s findings are: MCK has not played any role, Njuri Ncheke is a trusted and has methods like; oathing, dialogue and instilling of discipline. The study recommends use of complementary theoretical perspectives for further research and knowledge supplement in mitigation of ethnic land-related conflict in this field.

Histories of African Christianity

2021 •

Joshua Robert Barron

African Christianity is considerably older than the English, French, Portuguese, and German languages. African Christianity had been established as authentic African expressions of faith for centuries before the rise of Islam. There are churches in sub-Saharan Africa with a continuous 1700-year history. We should know, and celebrate, the stories of African Christianity. These titles deal with the histories of African Christianity. For contemporary realities of Christianity in African contexts, see my companion “Africa and Africans in World Christianity” bibliography. For African Christianity within the Roman Empire, only a few select titles are included, as traditional Western treatments of Christian history generally cover that time period thoroughly. This bibliography has three parts. The first includes general histories from antiquity to the present together with bibliographies. This includes selected texts from the vast literature on the patristic era in North Africa and Egypt. The second is for histories of African Christianity prior to 1500. The second is for histories of African Christianity after after 1500. As there can be some overlap, some titles are be listed in more than one category. [latest revision, 9 February 2024]

Influence of Marketing Strategy on Church Sustainability: The Anglican Church of Kenya

Peter Muriithi

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) is the oldest church in Kenya and the largest protestant denomination in the country. Since religions were liberalized after the attainment of political independence in AD 1964, the church has experienced declining congregations due to the registration of new denominations, especially the Pentecostal ones. The decline has been noticeable from the beginning of the 21st Century but there are no reports of strategies to resolve the phenomenon. Since congregation members are the customers for a church, the declining phenomenon indicates a marketing problem that requires a marketing strategy. This research investigated how the ACK is operationalizing a marketing strategy and its influence on its sustainability. The ACK operates on standardized structures and a diocese is the highest independent unit. This research was conducted in the diocese of Kirinyaga as the unit of analysis with Wanguru Archdeaconry as the unit of observation. The independent varia...

Article Settler-Missionary Alliance in Colonial Kenya and the Land Question

2020 •

Julius M Gathogo

This article sets out to demonstrate the hugger-muggers that oiled the existence of an unholy alliance between European settler-farmers and missionaries-the Anglicans and Presbyterians and/or the Protestant wing in particular-in 20th century Kenya and East Africa, and especially on land policies. With land for settlement being the key factor to both missionaries and settler-farmers, the land question undoubtedly became one of the major factors that glued them together in colonial Kenya (1895-1963). Was the settler-missionary alliance meant to hurt the same people whom the missionaries had come to convert to the God of Christendom? Most importantly, how did the missionaries relate with the African chiefs regarding the land question, especially with reference to Kirinyaga County of central Kenya? This further drives us to wonder: Was the Devonshire White Paper of 1923 and/or the Indian Question related to the land question? The article sets out on the premise that while land remained the most prized commodity in colonial Kenya (1895-1963) and the entire 20th century, the 21st century has seen the church-and especially the afro-Pentecostal wing of the church-focusing on money and wealth without necessarily focusing on land. In its methodology, the article has heavily relied on archival resources, unpublished works, and field work materials, especially with regard to Kirinyaga County of central Kenya where oral sources on missionaries and land acquisition were sought. It also reviewed existing literature regarding settler-missionary alliances, especially on land-related matters.

The Missionaries’ Engagement with Science and Technology in Colonial Kenya, 1887–1963

2023 •

Julius Gathogo

The missionaries’ engagement with science and technology in colonial Kenya (1887–1963) is evidentially seen through the use of the post-industrial revolution’s breakthroughs of the eighteenth century, which included: advancement in science and mass production, steam engines, and the rise of digital technology. The tendency to rely heavily on post-industrial innovations and inventions were critical in fast-tracking their missiological discourses, which included scriptural translations, publishing, and the use of printing machines. These were critical in generating instructional materials and especially the Bible, which was produced in the local indigenous languages by 1952, and by encouraging technical-science education after primary school, among other methods. Although the concept of science and technology is largely attributed to the scientific breakthroughs of the twenty-first century, we argue that this concept was also evident in both the African indigenous society and in the missionary era. The widespread use of the phrase ‘science and technology’ is further seen in the missionary enterprises since they founded or supported the establishment of technical schools that offered electrical engineering, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, mechanical engineering, and training in medicine and the establishment of dispensaries and hospitals, among other relevant activities. Methodologically, the research article endeavours to review the European missionary societies, especially the Protestant wing, in its aim to understand their engagement with science and technology, and to determine if there conflict between Western science and the indigenous systems. The data was gathered through a review of existing literature, archival sources, unpublished materials and other oral sources.
